MEC Lesufi welcomes arrest of learners

Two Grade 12 boy learners from MH Joosub Secondary School in Lenasia, close to the Vaal Triangle, were shot in the legs this morning, 16 July 2019, while walking to school. The victims were rushed to Lenmed Clinic and Lenasia Clinic respectively. It is alleged that the injured learners were shot by fellow learners from the same school.

The police have since arrested two Grade 9 learners, who are suspected to have been involved in the shooting incident and as such we welcome their swift response.
“We welcome the arrest of implicated learners, this is a sign of the cooperation agreement with the police to attend to these kind of acts occurring closer to our schools,” said MEC for Education, Panyaza Lesufi.

The Gauteng Department of Education has sent its psycho social unit to support the staff and learners at the school, including the victims and their families.

“The level of violence in and around our schools is of grave concern,” Lesufi said.

The SGB will institute disciplinary procedures and communicate with all affected stakeholders.
