VEREENIGING. – The Emfuleni Local Municipality(ELM) Mayor, Gift Moerane, delivered a message of hope to the people of Emfuleni through his first State of the Municipality Address (SOMA) last week. The Address took place at the Vereeniging City Hall, which was filled to its full capacity. The SOMA took place after ELM was recently listed among the worst performing municipalities in Gauteng.
It was delivered under the theme: “Building a people-centered municipality.” During his address, Moerane said the community deserves better in terms of service delivery from ELM.
“We cannot repeat a system of the previous government. Our mandate is to serve the people of Emfuleni without compromise. They are our priority. Right is right, wrong is wrong.” He stated that ELM officials implicated in shady dealings would be dealt with. Moerane also shared future plans which will ensure that the ELM regains the trust of its people.
“Our main objectives are to achieve financial stability and viability, to have good governance and improved service delivery.
Moerane, however, said that all of this could not be achieved if people do not pay for their services.
“The culture of non-payment is still persisting in our communities. This culture is negatively affecting service delivery at the expense of the poor.”
