ANC takes voters’ roll fight to electoral court

ANC heads to the Electoral Court, questioning thousands of voter registrations linked to individual addresses across Sedibeng.

SEDIBENG – The ANC in Sedibeng is heading to the Electoral Court over alleged irregularities and discrepancies it says it uncovered in the certified voters’ roll for Emfuleni, Midvaal and Lesedi.

The party says its analysis of the voters’ roll has raised serious concerns about unusually high numbers of registered voters linked to individual residential addresses.

In a media statement released on November 6, the ANC said it had decided to approach the Electoral Court after failing to resolve the concerns with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).

The party revealed that its analysis, dated August 7, identified several questionable entries, including 32 182 voter records without residential addresses and 34 instances where identical identity details allegedly appeared in more than one voting district.

Among the addresses highlighted by the ANC are 1 582 registered voters at 23210 Lerothodi Street in Sebokeng Unit 13, 1 256 at 1454 Mareka Street in Sharpeville and 965 at 14659 Khaketla Street in Sebokeng Unit 11.

Another address, 9807 Pula Street in Evaton West, allegedly had 779 voters registered against it.

The ANC said these findings required further investigation and an explanation from the IEC.

ANC Sedibeng regional secretary Jason Mkhwane said the party wanted the disputed entries verified and appropriate legal action taken based on the evidence.

“The ANC seeks verification of the disputed entries and appropriate legal relief based on the evidence. The legal team will advise on the application and the relief to be sought,” the statement reads.

Mkhwane stressed that the party was not automatically accusing individual voters of wrongdoing but wanted transparency around the accuracy of the voters’ roll.

The party further said it respected the democratic choices of residents but believed that concerns surrounding the voters’ roll deserved a transparent response.

The ANC said the concerns were previously raised with the IEC before the elections, following the Ward 28 by-election in May, and had also been the subject of Electoral Court proceedings.

The party has now indicated that its legal team will advise on the next steps as it seeks clarity on the disputed entries.
