Vereeniging born Karabo Poppy collaborates with Nike

Vereeniging.- Best known to showcase the visual beauty of Africa in both contemporary and traditional ways, Vereeniging born multi award winning illustrator Karabo Poppy Moletsane has collaborated with Nike for their latest Air Force1 collection.

The Nike AF1XKaraboPoppy is part of the brand’s “Nike By You” collaborations where the brand allows artists to customized sneakers. The illustrator added her touch to the famous sneakers, inspired by her roots and the diverse culture in the country. This is evident in the detail present on each of the shoes – from the symbols, the vivid palettes, and the patterns. Modern African beaded bracelets with vibrant palettes of black, yellow, green and purple motivate the various colorways the designer used. She also drew some design inspiration from South Africa’s barber and beauty salon signs that line the streets.

The  AF1XKaraboPoppy sneaker comes in different patterns, including flower embellishments and colours that represent the South African flag. Karabo has been featured on numerous design magazines and has spoken loudly about the need for African narratives in popular culture. She also acknowledged Western influences like science fiction on her works.

She has recently collaborated with beauty brand, Pond’s for their  Pimple Clear range. She designed the patterns for the limited edition bags that the brand introduced.
