Community urged to exercise caution this festive season

Police urge stokvel members to stay vigilant during the festive season.

The festive season is upon us, and police believe that this is the time when criminals try their luck with unsuspecting victims. Police spokesperson Sergeant Nthabiseng Mokhachane warns stokvel members to be cautious as the time to share money accumulated during the year draws closer.

“As the stokvel payout period approaches, the public is urged to exercise caution when withdrawing, sharing or transporting their stokvel dividends. Criminals may target individuals who are known to have received lump sums of money.”

Mokhachane advises members against discussing payout arrangements openly, to refrain from displaying large amounts of cash in public and remain alert when leaving financial institutions.

“Where possible, members should consider safer payment methods and make arrangements to travel safely. Stokvel members should also remain vigilant against individuals who may attempt to exploit them during this period.”

The public is further cautioned against the dangers of purchasing goods through social media pages without verifying the seller or confirming the actual product. Verify the legitimacy of online sellers, check independent reviews, request additional proof of the product, and use secure payment methods that offer buyer protection.

Anyone who suspects that they have been defrauded is encouraged to report the matter to the police. The SAPS calls on community members to remain vigilant, protect their hard-earned money, and work together with the police to promote safety, accountability, and professional service delivery.
