EVATON. – The festive season is upon us and many have plans to reap rewards from others’ sweat.
A 35-year-old woman was arrested at the Evagold Mall last Wednesday after being in possession of fake bank notes that amounted to R30 100.
It is said that the woman is from Jeppe Squatter Camp near Johannesburg and her accomplice were at Thabong Mall in Sebokeng where they both acted as if they had found the stash of money. Two ladies from an Old Age Home in Sebokeng were also in the vicinity when they were convinced by the suspect and her accomplice to go somewhere and share the money, unaware that it was fake.
They then went to the Evagold Mall where the money was shared but soon thereafter the women from the Old Age Home realised that they had been duped and that the money was fake. They then made a citizen arrest on one of the suspects. The Evaton Police were called, and the suspect was arrested. Her accomplice managed to flee the scene.
Police Spokesperson, Captain Aubrey Moopeloa, said that it is suspected that the two suspects followed the women from the Old Age Home from a bank at the Thabong Mall, where they had withdrawn a large sum of money.
“It has always been our advice as police that individuals must not withdraw a lot of money at the counter as one might not know who is going to follow them. Our community is also advised not to withdraw large sums of money for the festive season stokvels to share it at homes and in public places as they might be targeted.”
Moopeloa said that during the festive season, stokvels, clubs and any other financial institutions are advised to secure an appointment with bank management to withdraw large sums of money behind closed doors or make transfers.
