Mandela Day brings gifts for the Radebe family
“I was really touched after reading about the family’s living conditions."
EVATON.- Sedibeng Ster and Meisie Phakhathi surprised the Radebe family when they delivered a brand new double bed on Mandela Day, this past Saturday.
Phakathi, who is a teacher at one of the Sharpeville primary schools, promised to donate a bed after Sedibeng Ster ran article under the headline ‘Community members and EFF help needy family’ last week with Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leaders donating a Zozo to Thandi Radebe and her four children.
Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, Phakathi said that she was touched by the article and decided to do something about the family situation.
“I was really touched after reading about the family’s living conditions, especially seeing those images. Look, helping people is part of my nature.
“I have been helping the Sharpeville community where I teach. There is no way I can leave people to struggle while there is something I can do,” she said.
Phakathi was not even aware that it was Mandela Day until Sedibeng Ster told her this was her Mandela Day present, adding to the generosity of the gesture.
“I didn’t expect this, I was surprised when my boy said there are people looking for me. When I came, I saw a bed behind the van and I thought they were looking for directions but I recognized the journalist (Zacharia Nale), because he was here last weekend. I want to thank Mrs Phakhathi. God bless her for her kindness,” said Radebe.
