Miracle babies born during electrical fault at Kopanong Hospital
Despite an electrical fault at Kopanong Hospital, which disrupted electrical supply to parts of the theatre, labour ward and elevators, doctors successfully performed an emergency Caesarean section in a non-functional theatre.

“A 23-year-old female at 20 weeks gestation Malawian citizen came to Labour Ward complaining of lower abdominal pains,” Sedibeng District Health Services said in a statement. On examination she was found to be having Cord Prolapse. Due to COVID-19 regulations, no escorts were allowed, which was difficult as the patient had a language barrier.”
Dr. Kulula (Surgeon) and Dr Long (Anaesthetist) were both called to perform an emergency Caesarean section though the theatre was non-functional. The maintenance department reported that it might take 3 hours to restore the affected area.
“The patient had to be transported via stairs in a knee chest position.”
To the surprise of the team involved with the operation, it turned out that she had an undiagnosed twin pregnancy.
“2 alive and healthy baby boys weighing over 2kg, were born distressed, assessed and admitted to Ward 12 for observation.”
The mother and both baby boys, James and Jonathan were discharged in a satisfactory condition.
