Hitting the road for Human Rights

The walk was against gender-based violence, femicide, and child abuse.

SHARPEVILLE.- Local residents commemorated Human Rights Day in style when they embarked on a 12km walk over the weekend.

The walk started at St Cyprian Anglican Church in Sharpeville and proceeded to the Boipatong Monument, the Sebokeng Massacre Site, and ended up at the Roman Catholic Church in Zone 12, Sebokeng.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, one of the organisers of the walk, Shaka Radebe said that apart from commemorating Human Rights Day, the walk was against gender-based violence, femicide, and child abuse.

Radebe said he wants to thank all the stakeholders who made the Human Rights Walk a success such as the Wessels Mota Street Market, the Vaal Heritage Activist Foundation, and Kwanele Holekane (an organization fighting against gender-based violence and femicide).

“The walk was a great success and thanks to our partners for making this walk a success. We had a great walk with men, woman, young and old hitting the road,” he said. Radebe said this will now become an annual event.
