Waterdal community protest over the quarries

"As the community we signed the petition to close these quarries that are swallowing our children."

SEBOKENG.- The Waterdal community next to Eatonside and Boiketlong in Sebokeng gathered at the abandoned mine quarries in the area protesting for them to be closed on, Tuesday, Freedom Day. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Mamosweu Tsoabi, one of the organisers of the protest said that the protest was part of celebrating Earth Week to demonstrate their concern about quarries that were left unrehabilitated for more than 15 years in the area. Tsoabi said these quarries swallowed many kids around Sebokeng areas especially in Eatonside. The community, young and old were carrying banners demanding the immediate closure of these quarries. One of the families that was affected, was the Bangana family, their child Tshepang was swallowed (drowned) by these quarries on 9 February this year. “As the community we signed the petition to close these quarries that are swallowing our children. We are very concerned about these quarries that have been left unattended in our area. I want to thank Waterdal community for their positive response to the protest. It was very sad to see the parents being emotional when reflecting to what happened to their children,” she said.
