Sedibeng College students protest and study at the same time
“After engaging with the College Management, our pleas have fallen on deaf ears,”
VANDERBIJLPARK.- Sedibeng TVET College Students Representatives Council (SRC) members recently showed that they can fight and study at the same time.
They said that they are doing this to show solidarity to those students who have been neglected by National Financial Students Aid Scheme (NSFAS).
The students vowed that until their demands are met, they are not going to rest.
“We will continue to cross night outside the main gate,” they said.
When Sedibeng Ster arrived in the early morning around 05.00 recently, seven Students Representative Committee (SRC) members were busy warming themselves outside the main gate.
Tshenolo Mofokeng and Reitumetse Mokoena who are members of the SRC at Sedibeng College, Vanderbijlpark, said they have since shutdown the classes for the past five days. The aim was to address financial students aid scheme issues, as well as certificate matters.
“After engaging with the College Management, our pleas have fallen on deaf ears,” said Mokoena.
The main problem apparently started when some of the students were threatened with eviction from their private accommodations for not paying rent.
Mokoena said that the ‘camping’ comes as part of their concern.
“We not going to compromise our studies. At the same time we focus on our needs.” The fear was that once a students dropped out or fails, NFSAS rejects them. “The arrengement was that all students who can’t afford to be covered by NFSAS should be assisted. We have less fortunate students here.
“We are also aware that time is running out, soon we will be sitting for the final examination. Our wish is to see all students returning to classes.”
