EVATON. – Kingsol Chabalala, Member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature (MPL) for the Democratic Alliance (DA) says he is disappointed by the actions of an Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) Ward Councillor who left about three families stranded in a building that was meant to be a licensing department in Evaton.
According to the families, the councillor had taken them there temporarily after their RDP houses were flooded.
Six months later the families, which include a mother, her five children and two elderly persons, are still living in the building with no furniture.
Each family has been given a single office which they utilise as a kitchen, bathroom and bedroom.
Chabalala says: “What we have seen here is very sad and shows the character of the ANC. It is sad that the families have been subjected to these conditions in very cold times. Their sense of privacy has been completely taken away.”
Chabalala said that the building was not suitable for human habitation adding that he would try his best to assist.
The women said that they had tried to get hold of the ward councillor to find out when he would find them a suitable place to stay.
The mother of five said that she fears for the lives of her kids who have to leave early in the morning and walk long distances to school. “Initially the councillor had said that we would be here for two months. He does not even come to see us.”
The families said that they could not go back to their houses as their houses are flooded.
By the time of going to print, ELM had not responded to an inquiry pertaining to the matter.
