Beverly Hills’ land issue brings N1 to a standstill

“We will make sure our concerns receive proper attention.”

EVATON.- The residents of Beverly Hills near Evaton brought the N1 to a standstill when they barricaded the road on the both sides in protest over land issues over the weekend.
The Chairperson of the concern residents, Winston Monnakgotla said they had spent over R150 000 to buy stands and yet there are people that are now selling them as little as R20 000. Monnakgotla had made it clear that their protest had nothing to do with the issue of the release of Zuma campaigns that are currently taking place in the country.
He said that their protest was about houses and land.
“To make matters worse, just next to our houses, there’s lot of illegal squatters. This has already dropped the value of our houses,” said Monnakgotla adding that they had on several occasions approached both the office of the Gauteng MEC for Human Settlement Lebogang Maile and that of Premier David Makhura.
“They promised to come to our area within 30 days but to no avail. The matter dates back to 2010,” Monnakgotla said further explaining that they had no other option but to vent their anger on the N1. Late in the evening, the Public Order Police approached the residents to calm them down. Monnakgotla said they are not going to back down.
“We will make sure our concerns receive proper attention.”
