SEDIBENG.-  It is that time of the year again when Futballing Girls hosts the District Women In Sports Awards to acknowledge women for their success, strength and contribution in sports.

The awards are held to honour  selfless women in sportsfrom five districts in the Gauteng Province, namely the Sedibeng District, Tshwane, Ekurhuleni, City Of Johannesburg and  the West Rand.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sports at the launch of this year’s district’s women awards launch recently, the founder of Futballing Girls, Moonira Ramathula, said that the awards are designed to acknowledge women in the community for their role in sports, on and off the field of play. Ramathula, who seeks to inspire other women to become advocates of women in sports, told Sedibeng Ster Sport that as much as it is a difficult year for sports, with most sporting activities either not taking place or there being little activity, she saw the need to continue with the awards.

“These awards play a catalyst role at district level for the growth and development of girls and women in sport. This award is (meant) to acknowledge women in sports both on and off the field of play within Gauteng Province. Look, it has been a difficult year not for only sports but for everything. But despite all these challenges we felt there is a need to continue these annual awards to appreciate women in sports for their contribution,” said Ramathula.

She further added that  the nominations have  already been opened, with nomination forms available on Futballing Girls social media or on WhatsApp (065 690 5407). The Sedibeng District will host Women In Sports Awards on November 5, West Rand on 10 September, Ekurhuleni on 24 September, Johannesburg on October 8 and Tshwane on October 22. Some of the award categories include, Volunteer Of The Year Award, Sportswoman Of The Year with Disability and School Sports Athlete Of The Year to mention but few.

The Gauteng Women in Sports Awards are scheduled to take place on February 18 and 25 next year.
