Girl (14) apparently jumps from school building to try to take her own life

A Grade 8 pupil from Hoërskool Dr. Malan in Meyerton sustained head and hip injuries after she allegedly jumped from the second floor of a school building in an attempt to take her own life.

MEYERTON. Principal Rossie Briers confirmed that the child was taken by helicopter to Baragwanath Chris Hani Hospital in Soweto on Thursday afternoon.

Wessel Hattingh, chairman of the school’s governing body, says André Coetzee, a helicopter pilot and former pupil of the school, helped take the 14-year-old girl by helicopter to the hospital where she is currently being treated.

She is apparently in a stable condition. The girl lives in a local orphanage. According to Briers, it’s exam time at school.

Many children learn at home and only come in to write.

The incident apparently happened just after 11:00.

There were only a few bystanders who saw it happen. Counseling is apparently offered to affected learners.
