ELFA games called off due to heavy rains

“I have no choice because in May we were told we must be done with the league for play-offs."

VANDERBIJLPARK.- The Emfuleni Local Football’s (ELFA) Super League matches in the Vanderbijlpark Stream were called off due to waterlogged fields at the Shakespeare Stadium in Vanderbijlpark over the weekend.

When the teams arrived at the venue there was water covering the field due to the heavy rains experienced the previous night. In fact, it had been raining the whole weekend and there is no draining water system at Shakespeare Stadium. Seeing that the field was not playable, the ELFA Competitions Convener, Oupa Tladinyane, asked for all the games to be postponed. Tladinyane told Sedibeng Ster that the games will be played by some teams in the midweek because they are behind with their league schedule. He said that the deadline to finish the league programme is in May and playing games during the week is to speed up the league’s programme. Tladinyane said that he had no choice but to set the Super League matches during the week due to the deadline which is in May.

“I have no choice because in May we were told we must be done with the league for play-offs. The Vanderbijlpark Stream has more teams hence they will play even during the week. I know it is difficult for some teams to play in midweek, but we pleaded to those teams for now to play during the week,” said Tladinyane. The Vanderbijlpark Stream has more teams compared to other Super League streams, with fourteen teams. For this reason, Tladinyane stated that some of the teams will be forced to play their games during the week taking into consideration the situation.

Meanwhile, some of the league matches in other streams were also called off due to the heavy rain.
