National minimum wage increases – here’s what you need to know

As of 1 March, general workers, farmworkers and domestic employees will all receive the same rate per hour.

The Department of Labour has announced that the National Minimum Wage for these sectors will increase as of 1 March 2022 to R23 per hour. This is a substantial increase for the domestic sector, specifically.
The current national minimum wage for general workers and farmworkers is R21,69 per hour. Domestic employees currently receive R19,09 per hour.
Employers of these sectors must take note that the March salaries/ wages for general workers, farm-workers and domestic workers must be calculated at the new rate of R23 per hour.
Employers are urged not to unilaterally change the terms and conditions of the above-mentioned employees.
