Evaton community stops ELM’s SoMA
The State of the Emfuleni Local Municipal (ELM) State of the Municipality Address (SoMA) was dealt a heavy blow after angry Cuba Section, Evaton residents stopped it from being held last Friday.

EVATON.- The SoMA was expected to be tabled by ELM Executive Mayor, Sipho Radebe at the Wilberforce Community College in Evaton. However, the scene became ugly after the community members prevented him and his entourage from accessing the venue, demanding electricity.
Residents who have been living in the dark for months had in the early morning barricaded all three entrances leading to Wilberforce College with burning tyres and rocks and accused their Ward Councillor who is also the ELM MMC for Safety, Ndade Mokoena of not caring about their predicament. They said that Mokoena had failed on numerous occasions to call a public meeting to address them.
Mokoena and ELM MMC for Public Works, Vincent Jones tried to engage with the community before Radebe but the community ‘booed’ them out.
Later Radebe was transported in an armoured police vehicle to address the community. His attempts to convince the residents were also fruitless as the residents proceeded to disrupt the SoMA. Radebe promised to engage power utility, Eskom as he officially cancelled the SoMA until further notice.
