SEDIBENG.- Prior to the women’s continental tournament, SAFA promised Banyana Banyana bonuses if they went all the way to the finals and won the WAFCON, which they did when they beat the hosting nation Morocco 2-1.
The country came to a standstill after this famous victory with Banyana Banyana being crowned the African queens. The country packed the OR Tambo International to give them a warm welcome for making South Africa proud. As if this was not enough, President Cyril Ramaphosa honoured Banyana Banyana when he hosted them at Union Building a day after they arrived from Morocco. Ramaphosa challenged SAFA President Danny Jordaan to pay Banyana Banyana players equal bonuses to the men’s team, Bafana Bafana.
He said that there should be no discrimination when it comes to national teams as they also represent the country. However, after the ceremony Danny Jordaan told the media that the CAF prize money belongs to SAFA and the organisation must also consider a lot of things like bills. However, this didn’t go well for many South Africans, including parliament. Parliament also raised a concern that SAFA might not be able to pay Banyana Banyana their bonuses. As things stand, the whole country is at loggerheads with SAFA and Danny Jordaan’s statement with many calling for his head.
As if this is not enough, eNCA political analyst JJ Tabane publicly attacked SAFA on his show POWER TO TRUTH and accused the organisation of sexism. However, it is not yet clear when and how much Banyana Banyana will get their promised bonuses.
