VANDERBIJLPARK. – Thabo Tshabalala (9) lost his life recently following a drowning incident at Marikana informal settlement in Bophelong.
The incident took place on Friday, 07 October. Tshabalala together with some of the kids from the area were swimming in a quarry just a few meters away from his home when the tragic incident happened.
Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, Father Pitso Ramotshilisi said both he and the mother, Linah Tshabalala were left shocked and devastated by their son’s tragic death.

“Members of the community alerted us that Thabo was involved in a drowning incident. We immediately rushed to the scene and on our arrival at the scene, he had already died.”
The family informed Sedibeng Ster that the deep pit was left exposed following mining activity by contractors in the area.
Pitso said the pit is now filled with rain water which no longer dries up.
“This is what attracts the kids to go swimming. Thabo is the third child to drown at the same place. We are deeply hurt by the incident because Thabo had big dreams and wanted to make a success of his life.”
The bereaved parents said their son will be remembered as a child who had a zest for life and loved speaking about the future.
The family together with members of the community who were there to offer their support have since called for the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) to take action and cover up the deep pit before more lives are lost.
Police spokesperson Captain Fikile Funda confirmed the incident.
“Police have launched an inquest case docket and the circumstances around the incident will form part of the investigation.”
Sedibeng Ster has since inquired with ELM regarding the incident.
Tshabalala was buried on Saturday.
