Vereeniging residents ‘drown’ in rain water

Many residents would have been happy to welcome the territorial rain over the whole of the past weekend, but this was not to be for the residents of Vereeniging.

VEREENIGING. – The residents were left in misery as the roads were filled with water and they could not get out of their house, both on foot and in their vehicles.

The residents have for years now been complaining over a lack of service delivery in the town which should be provided by the Emfuleni Local Municipality. When it rains heavily, like it has been the case over the past few weeks rain water does not flow because of blocked drains, there are huge potholes on the roads, grass is not cut (as in some areas), electricity wires are left exposed at some municipal boxes, and rubbish is strewn at almost every corner.

Over the weekend the residents invited Sedibeng Ster and national news broadcaster, ENCA, to see their dilemma.

“The situation has been like this for years now, it is worse when the rain comes because we can not do anything. Please plead for us with the municipality to do something about this situation. We can not live like this and yet we are expected to pay for rates and taxes for service delivery. Where is the service, do you see it being delivered?” the residents asked.
