Former Firefighter becomes a Cadet in Public Safety

" The stipend has helped me feed and clothe my daughter. The rest is history,’’ she explained.

SEDIBENG.- Following an outstanding service with the Working on Fire program, Precious Pitso from Mamello in Vaal Marina has gracefully bowed out of the program as Assistant Stock Controller at the Provincial office.

Pitso has joined the Gauteng Department of Public Safety as a trainee Traffic Police Officer. As a Cadet, she intends to pass her training courses with distinctions. She said that she had done 2,4 km sit-ups, push-ups, and pull-ups during their recruitment.

‘‘It was such a herculean exercise. It was not any (simple) test,’’ she said.

But as a former veld and forest firefighter at Working on Fire, one of the Expanded Public Works Programs (EPWP), the exercises did not scare or deter her from doing well. Pitso said that she learned lots of things as a Stock Controller and a Firefighter. Working on Fire has helped in restoring her dignity.

Pitso is starting with a traffic course in February until the end of April, and she said that after training she will be expected to help with road law enforcement. The trainee Traffic Police Officers will be based at Cullinan, Pretoria.

‘‘This is an opportunity one cannot afford to snooze at. Otherwise, you are doomed. To fellow firefighters perverse and do not lose hope,’’ said Pitso.
