Rains bring misery for the community of Miami Sands
“We are literally swimming in water and excrement because when it rains heavily like it has been the case with the current heavy rains, we are left in misery yet we religiously pay our rates and taxes."

VANDERBIJLPARK. – It has always been believed that rains bring joy and wealth.
For the community of Miami Sands in Vanderbijlpark the current heavy rains have brought none of these, but sadness. The current heavy rains have left the streets of the area filled with water and the community members’ houses full of sewer that is gushing from the drains into their yards and houses.
The community members told Sedibeng Ster that the situation has been like this for years as the drains seem not to have the capacity to handle the heavy flow of rainwater.
The residents said that the situation has, for the past years, been reported to the relevant authorities but nothing has been done. Some residents said that the problem has been there as far back as 2016.

“The toilets can not flow, because when you flush the filth (excrement) comes back into our house. That filth is not only from our houses but also from our neighbors. Please make whoever is responsible for fixing this situation aware, because we have reported this for a number of years but nothing seems to be done,” the residents said.

In some streets owners of cars cannot get in and/or out of their yards because of the situation, and the owners said that they cannot even stay in their houses because of the smell inside their houses due to the sewer flowing into them.
Sedibeng Ster has tried to seek comment from the relevant authorities at the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) and is awaiting an answer/solution to the problem.
