Golden Highway shooter arrested at a local clinic

A 34-year-old man is behind bars with a gunshot wound after he was arrested by Orange Farm police, following a shootout with members on the Golden Highway.

ORANGE FARM – He went on a shooting spree with Orange Farm police after the car he was driving in, failed to stop when commanded to do so.

Minutes later, the 34-year-old suspect who exchanged fire with police was found at a local clinic, nursing gunshot wounds.

According to police, the man was in a vehicle with two other occupants when the vehicle they were driving in was stopped.

The suspect, jumped while the car was in motion, when chased by cops, he randomly shot at them (police) and disappeared into Tjovitjo informal settlement after getting shot on the arm.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, Orange Farm spokesman Sergeant Shaan Motsapi said “On Monday, May, 1, at about 10:00am, the police in Orange Farms were busy patrolling the Golden Highway for crime prevention duties, when they spotted a suspicious motor vehicle traveling on the south bond towards Johannesburg”.

Motsapi said police instructed the driver of the vehicle, who was with the other three occupants to pull off the road.

“The driver refused, and proceeded to drive away. The police gave chase and and unexpectedly the vehicle stopped at the Tjovitjo four-way stop. One of the occupants who was sitting in the back seat jumped off the vehicle and start running away and the suspicious vehicle also drove off once again,” he said.

While police chased the suspect who jumped off the vehicle, the suspect started shooting at police.

“Our members managed to shoot him in the arm, it is when he dropped the firearm and proceeded to run away and disappeared inside the squatter camp,” added Motsapi.

Motsapi said police conducted further investigations with regard to the incident and tracing of the suspect.

“The shot suspect was later found at a clinic, whilst seeking medical attention. After receiving treatment for the wound sustained on his arm, he was released from the clinic to the police for arrest and detention of unlicensed firearms and live ammunition,” he said.

The man has since been arrested for possession of unlicensed firearm and live ammunition.

Orange Farm Station Commander, Brigadier Raymond Buthelezi has applauded the involved members for such diligent action and response against crime, as well as disarming and apprehending a suspect who was about to commit crime, with the unlicensed firearm.

The suspect will soon appear at the Vereeniging Magistrate’s court facing charge of illegal firearm and ammunition.
