SEDIBENG.- This could be the last World Cup for Banyana Banyana Captain Refiloe Jane who will be turning 31 on 4 August.
Jane will be leading Banyana Banyana as the captain in the upcoming FIFA Women’s World Cup.
This former VUT student will be carrying Banyana Banyana on her shoulder when the FIFA Women’s World Cup kickstarts on 20 July with Australia and New Zealand as co-host of this world showpiece. Jane’s experience will be key for Banyana Banyana as she is plying her trade abroad and has been part of Banyana Banyana for a long time now.
This might be Jane’s last world up as she will be 34 in the next world cup after four years. However, there are high possibilities that she can still play in the next world cup considering her experience.
Speaking to media personnel during the announcement of the final squad to represent South Africa in the World Cup, Jane said she felt honoured to be appointed as the team’s captain. However, this is not the first time Jane will be leading the team at this level.
She has been there before and done it when Banyana Banyana was crowned the Women’s African Cup Of Nations Queen’s.
“I really feel honoured to be tasked with the responsibility to lead the team and I want to thank my teammates for showing confidence in me to lead them. We are going there as a team to represent our country with pride and dignity. We are not going there on holiday, but to work and hopefully to bring the trophy home,” she said.
Desiree Ellis’s troops are expected to jet out of the country to World Cup on 5 July ahead of their opening game against Sweden on 23 July. South Africa is in Group G alongside Argentina, Sweden, and Italy.
