SEBOKENG – French South African Schneider Electric Education Centre (FSASEC) students from the Vaal University of Technology, spent their Mandela Day beautifying Sizanani Thusanang Comprehensive School in Sebokeng.

From revamping their vegetable garden to installing electrical plugs in the science lab, these are some of the activities which they carried out on Tuesday, July 18.

As a way to extend their helping hand in motivating disadvantaged pupils who excel in Maths and Sciences, the team from FSASEC also held a maths Olympiad for more than 60 pupils in grades eleven and twelve.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, Lydie Mayoudom, Mathematics, and Engineering Science facilitator explained their role in different institutions of higher learning including VUT and Sedibeng College.

“We are in partnership with VUT and Schneider, including Sedcol, teaching electrical engineering and science. Today we visiting Sizanani where we going to render activities as part of Mandela Day and host a maths competition,” she said.

Mayoudom said F’SASEC VUT together with Schneider Electric adopted the school and helps academically excelling disadvantaged pupils by enrolling them in their courses for a certain period of time.

“We have adopted the school because most of pupils from this school do well and end up in the two institutions we work with. Since many pupils end up in our facilities, we then motivate them from early grades to consider electrical engineering and science in general as their field of choice,” she added.

Selecting a group of pupils who are interested in electricity as a career, Potego Morwamotshe, FSASEC Technician, and his team wired the school’s lab to help their facility to be able to power up modulators donated to the school.

“We are running an installation project in the lab with my two teams including some of the pupils from the school. We are fitting single and three-pronged plugs to supply the panels donated to the school with enough power,” said Morwamotshe.

Principal, Wandile Mbola said “We are privileged and honoured to have an institution of higher learning visiting our school. These visits mean a feast of opportunities for our pupils, this is the start of many better things to happen for our school.”
