VEREENIGING – The Vereeniging Police have continued their efforts to prevent crime, promote a safe learning environment, and educate learners on the legal consequences of aggressive behaviour through a school awareness campaign.
This time, over 400 Riverside High School learners benefited from a multidisciplinary informative session led by Sergeant Anna Maredi from the Social Crime Prevention Unit at Vereeniging SAPS.
The event was carried out in conjunction with members of the Victim Friendly Facility, the Films and Publications Board (FPB), Department of Social Development, Indibano, Gauteng Traffic Wardens and the Sedibeng District Junior Commissioner.
Focused on bullying, peer pressure, learners’ rights and responsibilities, various speakers unpacked the lasting consequences of bad behaviour on school premises, as well as the negative impact bullying has on other kids.
Learners were encouraged to refrain from bullying, fighting and infringing on other children’s rights. They were further urged not to succumb to negative peer pressure and reminded of the importance of making responsible decisions that contribute to a safe and positive school environment.
Addressing learners, Maredi emphasised that education is a powerful tool for personal and economic growth. She encouraged learners to take their education seriously.
“Education can open doors to better employment opportunities, build self-confidence and equip you with the skills needed to overcome challenges and solve problems,” she said.
Stakeholders further committed to continued engagement with learners and ongoing monitoring and awareness initiatives aimed at addressing bullying, fighting and other challenges affecting learners.
Speaking to Ster North, police spokesperson Sergeant Nthabiseng Mokhachane said the programme was a resounding success and had a positive impact on the learners.
Vereeniging SAPS and its stakeholders will continue working with schools and communities to promote safer learning environments and empower young people to make positive choices.
