GAUTENG. – In concerted efforts to address serious and violent crimes, police across various districts in Gauteng recovered over 400 unlicensed firearms and nearly 6000 rounds of ammunition over four weeks (27 June to 23 July 2023).
This success was achieved in partnership with other law enforcement agencies, Business Against Crime South Africa’s Eyes and Ears (E2) Initiative partners, and other relevant stakeholders.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo reports that approximately 230 suspects were arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition across the province.
“These operational successes, amongst other recoveries, are the result of SAPS Gauteng’s multi-disciplinary crime-fighting efforts that include Operation Shanela, routine crime prevention patrols, random stop-and-searches and vehicle checkpoints (VCPs).
“Unlicensed firearms and ammunition are also recovered through community tip-offs. All the recovered firearms will be subjected to a ballistic test to determine whether it can be linked to other serious crimes committed.”
