The team achieved this feat with all odds stacked against them.

SEDIBENG.- Banyana Banyana put up a brave fight against Italy when they beat them 3-2 to proceed to the knockout stages of the 2023 Women’s World Cup on Wednesday morning.

The spirited Banyana Banyana did what was expected from them, to win this game, against Italy to proceed to the last sixteen. The team achieved this feat with all odds stacked against them, especially after losing their opening game against Sweden (2-1) and drawing 2-2 against Argentina.

Coach Desiree Ellis’ team took the lead in most parts of the game but failed to protect it until the last minute of the game when they scored the winning goal courtesy of prolific striker, Thembi Kgatlane.

This achievement will go down in the history books of South African football as Banyana Banyana is the first South African football national team to go to the knockout stages of the World Cup. After the final whistle, it was celebrations all over the country including at the MooiVaal Media newsroom, in Vanderbijlpark.
