SEDIBENG.- The DSTV Premiership League for the 2023/2024 season is in full swing and with no surprises.
As expected Mamelodi Sundowns started their league campaign where they left off last season. The biggest question is, will there be any team that will challenge Sundowns this season, or like last season it is going to be a one-horse race?
Mamelodi Sundowns has been dominating the domestic league unchallenged with Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates happy to finish as runners-up to this Tshwane-based outfit. With the season having started, there are no teams that seem to be going to stop Mamelodi Sundowns from defending their league title.
Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates are the only teams that are capable to challenge Sundowns for the league title but these Soweto giants have become a former shadow of themselves for the past ten years.
What does this mean with the standard of South African football with one team continuing to dominate the DSTV Premiership League unchallenged?
Much has been said and written about Sundowns signing the best players to weaken their opponents. However, this cannot be an excuse for teams like Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates because, in the past, these teams used to be known for signing the best talent in South African football especially Kaizer Chiefs when the club was known as a cup specialist.
However, it never rains but pours for both these Soweto giants finishing second to Mamelodi Sundowns season after season. As things stand, it seems as if they are on course to retain their league title after winning both of their opening league matches especially against their rivals Kaizer Chiefs recently.
But having said this, SuperSport United cannot be ruled out from challenging Mamelodi Sundowns for the league title.
