
SEDIBENG.- The Sedibeng Girls Chess Team produced a ‘five-star’ performance at the OR Tambo Soncini Social Cohesion Provincial Games held at Nike Centre in Soweto on 28 -29 October.
The girls’ chess team finished third place in the tournament and some individuals also brought medals home. These annual games are hosted by Gauteng Provincial Sports, Arts, Culture, and Recreation in collaboration with the Gauteng Province Sports Council. This tournament saw five regions participating namely, Tshwane, Johannesburg Metro, West Rand, and Sedibeng.
These games included school sports and visitors from Italy.
Johannes Lepota from Emfuleni Chess Club told Sedibeng Ster Sport that it was a great achievement not only for the Sedibeng Girls team but also for individual players. Lebohang Boroko from Khutlo-Tharo Secondary School brought a silver medal home after she finished second in the girls’ category.
Lepota was full of praise for both the Sedibeng Girls Chess Team and those individual players who carried the team to finish third in the tournament. The OR Tambo Soncini Cohesion Games is an annual tournament with players selected from all the Sedibeng municipalities from the black, white, and coloured communities.
“As the Emfuleni Chess Club we want to take this opportunity to congratulate Sedibeng Girls Chess Team for their outstanding performance throughout the tournament. The truth is that as Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) we carried this team on our shoulders as we were outstanding on the day,” said Lepota.
These games take place every year with the athletes standing a chance to be selected to represent South Africa at the Soncini Social Cohesion Games in Italy.
