EFF condemns Emfuleni’s ‘political maneuvers’

The party criticised the mayor’s decision to reinstate the trio of MMCs, seeing it as an act of desperation.

SEDIBENG. – The Sedibeng chapter of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has shown no surprise over recent developments in the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM), where three Councillors were reinstated as Members of the Mayoral Committee (MMCs).

About six months ago, Executive Mayor Sipho Radebe allegedly removed Mbuyiselo Gantsu, a representative of the Pan Africanist Congress (PAC), from the executive committee, citing his initiation of a motion against him. Additionally, Setlare Mahlasela, representing Vaal Lekgotla, resigned from the MMC position, along with Jonas Radebe from the Community Solidarity Association. Isaac Khithika, Chairperson of EFF Sedibeng, commented that these removals and resignations seemed part of an effort to reorganise the political governance structure within the municipality.

However, Khithika criticised the mayor’s decision to reinstate the trio of MMCs, seeing it as an act of desperation by the ANC to retain control over Emfuleni. He stressed that these reinstatements would not bring about the needed changes as long as Mayor Sipho Radebe remained in office. Khithika further suggested that this decision appeared to be driven by political motives rather than genuine concern for the community’s welfare.

The EFF reiterated its stance, advocating for the removal and replacement of what they considered an inadequate mayor. Khithika reaffirmed the party’s unwavering commitment to pushing for a responsible and effective local government that prioritises the collective interests of South African communities.

Earlier this year, reports from Sedibeng Ster indicated that several political parties, including the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania (PAC), New Horizon Movement (NHM), Vaal Lekgotla, Democratic Alliance (DA), and Freedom Front Plus (FF Plus), operating within ELM, had reportedly joined forces to form a voting coalition pledging to support Radebe’s removal through a vote of ‘No Confidence.’ However, their plans were thwarted, leading to the resignations of the MMCs, citing “political reasons”.

In response to the reappointments, Mayor Radebe thanked the returning MMCs, recognising their past service in their respective roles during their absence, and expressed hope for their continued dedication to serving the Emfuleni community.

“I also wish to extend my gratitude to all MMCs who have been acting in this (their) portfolio(s) during their absence. I hope that we will continue serving the community of Emfuleni with diligence and excellence.”

The reappointments include Mbuyiselo Kantso overseeing Agriculture, LED Planning, and Tourism; Jonas Radebe managing Environmental Management and Planning, and Setlhare Mahlasela responsible for Sports, Recreation, Arts, Culture, and Information Services.
