Midvaal Local Municipality (MLM) hopes to free the Sicelo area from illegal electricity connections through a project to electrify 1200 households.

MIDVAAL. – Midvaal Local Municipality has once again delivered on a promise made to Sicelo residents. This is after the municipality announced the second phase of the Sicelo electrification project.

During his 2023 State of the Municipality Address (SoMA), MLM Mayor Peter Teixeira said the municipality had embarked on an electrification project in Sicelo informal settlement costing R18 million in the 2023 financial year.

“Further to this, R50 million has been budgeted of which R35 million is from INEP and R15 million from our funding. This initiative aims to provide legal electricity connections to the communities in Kuvukiland, Extension 5, and Stand 188 of Sicelo.”

On Monday, January 2 MMC for Engineering, Reginald Hubbard, held a public meeting with the community of Ward 8 regarding the electrification of Sicelo.

According to MLM, the project aims to provide electricity to 1200 households.

“The first phase was completed in 2023 when 200 households received electricity. The second phase aims to electrify 400 households in 6 months.”

MLM hopes to free the area from illegal electricity connections through the project.
