SEDIBENG – Nhlanhla Sizani, previously a familiar presence alongside law enforcement officers during various police operations and events, often donning South African Police Service (SAPS)-branded attire, now finds himself facing serious allegations of impersonation by the Gauteng Hawks department.
Despite presenting himself as an ambassador of provincial police in numerous media interviews, the 24-year-old is now confronted with accusations of posing as a United Nations (UN) Ambassador.
Appearing briefly at the Pretoria Magistrates Court on January 16, Sizani faces charges of fraud, forgery, and uttering, following the issuance of a summons on December 12, 2023.
According to Gauteng Hawks spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale, the accusations stem from Sizani submitting a fraudulent letter bearing the United Nations insignia, in which he requested SAPS escort to polling stations during elections under the guise of a UN Ambassador.
Mogale explained: “Sizani is said to have misrepresented himself as a United Nations (UN) Ambassador/Diplomat and thus was escorted by SAPS Diplomatic Police Unit to various polling stations as an observer.”
However, an investigation by the Hawks’ Crime Against the State within Serious Organised Crime Investigation revealed that Sizani was not a legitimate Ambassador/Diplomat, and the UN had not requested an escort for him.
Consequently, SAPS incurred actual financial losses due to this misrepresentation.
The case against Sizani was postponed to January 23, 2024, to allow the accused to secure legal representation.
The charges of fraud, forgery, and uttering underscore the seriousness of the allegations, bringing into question Sizani’s credibility and the potential ramifications of his actions on the reputation of both the SAPS and the UN.
