Botched prevention nightmare leaves mom with a hole in her bum

"Had the clinic continued to prolong my problem, I would have had my leg amputated," said Tumahole.

SEBOKENG – Lerato Tumahole (31) says a family planning injection gone wrong, has left her with a terrible hole in her bum.

This is after she was injected twice on the one bum at Zone 17 clinic when she went for her prevention trimester injection.

Days after she was injected, her bum started to grow a lump, which later turned into a purulent oozing wound.

After consulting the clinic for a whole week without any assistance rather than being given painkillers, Tumahole’s wound led her to a hospital, and ending undergoing surgery to remove the grown lump.

Recounting her shocking situation, Tumahole said when she got to the hospital, the nursing staff wore masks due to the awful odour the wound had.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster at her family home in Zone 17, seated with one bum on a coach, Tumahole said doctors told her that her entire leg would be amputated had she prolonged the wound.

“I visited the clinic on February 23 for my trimester family planning injection. Days later my boyfriend told me I had a growing lump which didn’t look good. I constantly felt the pain, but thought it was the needle since I went for my injection,” she said.

Tumahole said the growth led to her consulting the clinic and asking for a transfer letter to be admitted to a local hospital.

“I was turned back by the nursing staff after reporting the lump at a very early stage. All they gave me was painkillers to ease the pain and told me I would get better. When the lump grew bigger and started having an odour, I went again with a friend who made a hullabaloo at the clinic until I was referred to the hospital,” she added.

“When I got to Sebokeng Hospital, the doctor told me I should have reported the problem from the first day I learned it. She told me they have to operate on me because if the lump continues, my bone will be affected and it will have to be amputated,” she Tumahole.

The mother of three said she was distraught following her condition and wished the clinic would have listened to her complaints at an early stage.

“I’m traumatized after what I went through. Nurses do not take the general public seriously. Had they attended to my issue, I wouldn’t be having a hole up my butt.

“I now sit with one butt on the couch and sleeping it’s a nightmare. You can imagine how terrible I feel with a hole that can fit your entire fist,” she told the reporter.

Following several inquiries to the Gauteng Health Department, days later, the department had no response to share with Ster.

At the time of publishing this story, the facility, Sedibeng Health Department, and the provincial officer were still mum.
