ANC Sedibeng mourns stalwart

The passing of Mme Mamorobi has undoubtedly left a void.

BOPHELONG. – The African National Congress (ANC) in the Sedibeng Region mourns the passing of its veteran and stalwart, Mme Dimakatso Martha Morobi, affectionately known as “MaMorobi,” from Bophelong.

Morobi passed away on February 1.

Jason Mkhwane, ANC Sedibeng Regional Secretary, described Morobi as a dedicated member of the organisation, noting her lifelong commitment to the ANC and her tireless fight against the oppressive apartheid regime. Mkhwane added that Morobi was a committed activist who played a crucial role in various endeavours. One of her significant contributions was facilitating safe passage for fellow activists, particularly students and youth leaving the country for exile, mainly from Vaal and Soweto.

“These young people were instructed to stay indoors until their movement and transport were determined to be clear and safe, ensuring their protection during a time of great danger. She also excelled in coordinating political activities and managing communications with exiles, which were vital for the success of our resistance efforts,” Mkhwane remarked.

Beyond her involvement in the struggle against apartheid, Morobi was elected as the first Chairperson of the ANC Women’s League in the Vaal Sub-Region under the then Pretoria-Witwatersrand-Vaal Region (PWV Region) for two years.

Subsequently, as the organisation changed structure, the PWV Region became a Province, and the Sub-Region was converted to the Vaal Region, where she was elected as the first Chairperson of the ANCWL Vaal Region for another two years. She further served as an additional member of the ANC Bophelong Branch, participating in various sub-committees.

“She played a pivotal role in the establishment of the ANC PWV Veterans structure and served as a member of Parliament in the National Assembly from 1999, serving two terms,” Mkhwane added.

As the only female MP on the Sports and Recreation Committee, Morobi made significant contributions to the fields of safety and security, social development, and quality of life.

“Her participation in debates and oversight visits, both nationally and internationally, further exemplified her dedication to serving the people,” Mkhwane noted.

“We also acknowledge her invaluable assistance in the electoral process in the Vaal, where her expertise and dedication were instrumental in ensuring fair and democratic elections. The passing of Mme Mamorobi has undoubtedly left a void. We extend our deepest sympathies to her family, friends, and comrades during this difficult time. May her soul rest in eternal peace, knowing that her contributions to the ANC and the fight against apartheid will never be forgotten,” Mkhwane concluded.

Morobi was laid to rest over the past weekend.
