
VANDERBIJLPARK.-The Evaton Warriors Basketball Club hosted a successful U/16 Basketball Top 4 Tournament at VUT on Saturday.
Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Evaton Warriors’ Jappie Hlalele said that the tournament went as planned thanks to the teams that honoured their invitation. He told Sedibeng Ster Sport that this one-day four-team tournament was aimed at bringing basketball back into the community.
Hlalele mentioned the lack of basketball facilities as one of the reasons that delayed the development of this sport.
The teams that formed part of this tournament were the Trojans Basketball Club from Sharpeville, SSF Phantoms Basketball Club from Steel Park, Vereeniging, Net from Boipatong, and Evaton Warriors from Evaton (hosts).
The hosts were crowned the tournament champions with Sharpeville Trojans Basketball Club finishing as the runners-up. Boipatong Nets Basketball Club took 3rd place while Steel Park Phantoms Basketball Club finished 4th place in the tournament.
There were also individual awards with Lesedi Tladi from Evaton Warrior walking away with the Best Shooting Guard Award, Mongezi Machobane from Trojans Basketball Club was named The Best Small Forward, Thabo Mogotsi from Evaton Worriers scooped The Best Power Forward, Sthembiso Nyembe and Nkosi Masoka, both from Evaton Warriors scooped The Best Centre.
“I want to take this opportunity to thank the Department of Sports and Recreation and VUT for their contribution to making this tournament a great success. As Evaton Warriors I would also like to also thank the teams that accepted our invitation. We are looking forward to making it better come next year with more sponsors on board,” he concluded.
