Stakeholders unite in the fight against GBV

SEBOKENG – The fight against gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF)is one that needs unity. This was highlighted during the recent event held at Boitumelo. The event started with a march from Zone 12 to the venue. The street procession was led by 016 Family Bikers to Boitumelo Trinity Church.

During the march, men and women walked the streets of Boitumelo holding placards with various messages. They shared information on how to report incidents and to also seek help from various organisations.

The event was held in conjunction with the Community Policing Forum, Youth Crime Prevention Desk, Department of Social Development, Department of Correctional Service, Cogta, Department of Community Safety, UNISA, Nacosa, Department of Justice, Department of Public Safety Sedibeng and Emfuleni, Vaal University of Technology, GBV Brigades, National Prosecuting Authority, various NGO’s and NPO’s, the 016 Family Bikers and GTW.

Upon arrival at the venue, officials and dignitaries from various departments shared important messages and information about the scourge of GBVF in the community and how it can negatively impact those who experience it.

GBVF survivor Lebohang Mokhele shared her story of how she fought hard to survive. Mokhele said it was not easy and spoke proudly about her story.

ELM MMC for Public Safety Ndade Mokoena gave the keynote address and highlighted the seriousness of GBVF and how it affects the community at large.

Peter Kele from Sedibeng Municipality Public Safety pleaded with community members to report GBVF-related cases and encouraged men not to be embarrassed to ask for assistance from the police.

He further stated: “The police will never laugh at you or judge you as a man when you go and report GBV, it’s all a myth. I want one person who went to report and was mocked or laughed at.”

Mr Motloenya from the Department of Justice educated the community members about the problems they encounter and how the victims tend to withdraw cases while they are still awaiting judgment.

Lieutenant Colonel Rafube shared the stats for different sectors in the Sebokeng precinct and how the SAPS is trying so hard to prevent such cases. “I believe with the help of the community members, we can overcome this ordeal.”

Police spokesperson Nthabiseng Mokhachane urged members of the community to participate in various structures of community patrols and to report any crimes in their respective areas.
