NWU sends off Class of 2025 at celebratory picnic

NWU celebrates resilience, achievement, and new beginnings at annual Final Years Picnic.

The NWU in Vanderbijlpark recently marked a major milestone, as final-year students gathered for the annual Final Years Picnic, a festive celebration held at the campus picnic area opposite the Big Lapa. The event brought together graduates-to-be, staff, alumni, and student leaders for an afternoon of reflection, encouragement, and pride.

Delivering the keynote address, Prof Jeffrey Mphahlele, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research, Innovation, Community Engagement and Postgraduate Studies, reflected on the students’ academic journey, reminding them of the uncertainty many felt when choosing their university years ago.

“Today, we believe you do not regret the choice of your destiny – having picked one of the best universities in South Africa and Africa,” Prof Mphahlele said.

He commended the resilience of the Class of 2025:
“Critics wanted to bury your dreams and ambition, but here you are. As Nelson Mandela said, ‘A winner is a dreamer who never gives up.”

Encouraging students to transition confidently into the alumni community, he asked: “Are you ready to become a North-West University Alumnus?”

Prof Mphahlele highlighted the global value of NWU qualifications. “Our qualifications are like passports; they open opportunities globally. Do not be afraid to spread your wings or test the international market.”

He reminded the graduates that the path ahead may be challenging, but it is achievable.

“Job hunting can be overwhelming, but never lose focus. Success favours a prepared mind,” he said.

The programme also featured Tshepang Shirley Mosokwene, who spoke on behalf of NWU alumni. Mosokwene encouraged students to uphold the university’s values and stay connected after graduating.

Former SCC Chairperson Kamohelo Zwane shared leadership lessons and praised the cohort for their perseverance through difficult academic years.

From the Career Services and Alumni Relations Office, Thoriso Maseng reminded students to use NWU career support platforms and alumni networks as they prepare to enter the job market.

Event organiser Zanele Ngobese from the Alumni office said this event aimed to celebrate our final-year students and prepare them for the transition from student life into the alumni community. “We wanted to honour their achievements, motivate them for the future, and give them a meaningful send-off as they step into the next chapter of their lives.”

Ngobese praised the turnout and the spirit of the day.

“The event was a great success. It was heartwarming to see our final-year students celebrated with such enthusiasm and support as they prepare to leave the NWU nest,” she said. “This is a special moment for them, and we are proud to have created a memorable send-off.”

The NWU Choir and Eagi entertainment added colour and joy to the programme, creating an atmosphere worthy of the achievements of the Class of 2025.
