Initiate dies at Toreng initiation school

A Sebokeng initiation school has been plunged into mourning after one initiate collapsed and died during initiation proceedings.

SEDIBENG – A tragic incident at an initiation school in Toreng, on the outskirts of Sebokeng, has left initiates devastated and a family in mourning.

The incident occurred on December 28 when one initiate collapsed and died while undergoing the sacred rite of passage.

Two other initiates were rushed to Kopanong Hospital for medical treatment.

Gauteng Police have confirmed the incident to Sedibeng Ster.

The monitoring team for initiation schools in the area said the committee was called by the initiation chiefs who reported the matter.

“We went to the scene and, after arriving, contacted the police,” said a committee member.

Details surrounding the incident remain unclear.

Gauteng provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo confirmed that an inquest has been opened.

“We are investigating the circumstances that led to the death of a male initiate. A postmortem will be conducted to establish the cause of death,” Masondo said.
