The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has strongly condemned the assault of an 11-year-old girl at Phehello Primary School in Sebokeng.
In a response to an enquiry by Ster North, the department said it is aware of the unfortunate incident that occurred on March 3, where a schoolgirl was allegedly assaulted by a parent, who gained entry into the school premises under false pretenses.
“Consequently, an urgent meeting with various stakeholders, including the School Management Team, was held on March 5 to obtain factual information regarding the said incident and discuss appropriate steps to safeguard the school community within the school environment.”
While the police are handling the criminal case, the GDE has launched its own internal investigation. The outcome of this probe will decide what further actions are taken.
To help the young girl recover, psychosocial support has been sent to the school. The department is also running an awareness campaign to encourage the community to help create a safer learning environment.
“This is to ensure that quality teaching and learning take place in a conducive environment, where all role-players subscribe to the key deliverables.”
The attack has sparked anger from local groups, including the National Association of School Governing Bodies (NASGB) and the MK Party. Both are demanding stricter security at school gates and justice for the victim and her family.
Sergeant Nthabiseng Mokhachane confirmed that police investigations are still ongoing. However, the suspect has since been released on a warning.
