Midvaal grants rates relief to farmers hit by foot-and-mouth disease
Midvaal Local Municipality has introduced a 10% property rates rebate for agricultural properties affected by foot-and-mouth disease, offering financial relief to farmers during the national state of disaster.
Midvaal Local Municipality (MLM) will provide a 10% property rates rebate for agricultural categorised properties impacted by foot-and-mouth disease.
A move through which the municipality highlights its commitment and compassion to the community it serves. MLM aims to help farmers maintain stability by offering its support during the devastating national state of disaster.
Foot-and-mouth disease has had a devastating impact on the agricultural and farming sector, resulting in livestock losses, export restrictions, and a significant strain on farmers, with broader implications for economic growth.
In response to the severe effects of the outbreak, a National State of Disaster was declared in terms of the Disaster Management Act in February.
In line with this declaration, Midvaal Council approved the additional 10% rebate in accordance with the Municipal Property Rates Act. A section of the act makes provision for relief measures in instances where properties are affected by disasters or other serious adverse social or economic conditions. The resolution was adopted during the Third Ordinary Council Meeting held in March.
According to MLM, farmers seeking the rebate must submit an application through the municipal offices or the official Midvaal website. Supporting documentation, such as proof of agricultural status and evidence of the impact of foot-and-mouth disease, may be required. The rebate will apply for a period of 12 months from the date of approval.
The rebate will be subject to annual review or may be withdrawn upon the lifting of the National State of Disaster.
