Memorial service held for teen who drowned at Sharpeville swimming pool

A somber candlelight vigil was held at the Sharpeville swimming pool following an incident that claimed the life of a 15-year-old boy over the weekend.

SHARPEVILLE – Dozens of mourners affected by the tragic passing of the 15-year-old Sebokeng teen who drowned at a Sharpeville public swimming pool paid their respects during a moving memorial on Wednesday (April 8).

Tsoarelo Likana lost his life following a freak accident on April 4, when he slipped and hit the swimming pool banks while he and a couple of friends went on a swimming outing.

The Grade 10 pupil from Moshate Secondary School was visiting the soccer grounds near George Thabe Stadium in Vuka when they decided to cool off following a soccer match in the scorching sun.

Friends, family, and the communities of Sebokeng and Sharpeville gathered at the very facility for a candlelight service.

The somber service was also attended by members of the ANC Women’s League (ANCWL) and the newly appointed Gauteng MEC of Social Development, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, accompanied by ANCWL Secretary in Sedibeng, Disebo Tlebere.

Speaking to the media, Nkomo-Ralehoko said, “We came to pay our respects to the family of Tsoarelo Likana. I know there is nothing we can possibly say that will take away the hurt and pain the family is feeling, but they must know they have many people who care about them and who are feeling their sadness too. May God comfort and strengthen them during this difficult time.”

Tlebere said, “This tragedy affects all of us, especially the mother. We came as women to comfort Tsoarelo’s mother during these difficult times.”

While many have comforted the bereaved family, Tsoarelo’s mother, Nkoboi, said they are struggling to come to terms with his passing.

“I remember his last moments…he was set to attend a function at Phoenix in Vereeniging. He boasted about how he was going to look smart. My boy was sweet and full of life. I can’t believe he died so young; he had so many dreams. We had hoped for many things from him, especially because he was so close to finishing high school,” she said.
