Proposed Vaal SEZ set to restore Vaal to its former glory
Deputy Minister Zuko Godlimpi engaged residents and business owners in Vereeniging on plans for the Vaal Special Economic Zone, an initiative aimed at reviving the region’s manufacturing sector.
VEREENIGING – The Vaal Triangle is poised for a major economic comeback as plans for the new Vaal Special Economic Zone (SEZ) take shape. During a public meeting at the Vereeniging Town Hall, Deputy Minister of Trade, Industry, and Competition, Zuko Godlimpi, met with local business owners and residents to discuss how the project will breathe new life into the region.
He explained that the initiative aims to restore the area’s former manufacturing strength and provide a sense of dignity through large-scale job creation.

According to Godlimpi, the move to designate the SEZ follows eight years of extensive work done within the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the DTIC) to study the causes of the collapse of the manufacturing might of the region 30 years ago and to explore new policy instruments that would revive and protect it.
Officials believe that while the Vaal already possesses a strategic location and a skilled workforce, it has lacked the modern investment needed to stay competitive. The new economic hub will focus on forward-thinking sectors, including green industry, food processing, logistics, energy, and water-based businesses linked to the Vaal River.
Local leaders have voiced strong support for the plan, viewing it as a vital turning point for the unemployed.
Sedibeng District Mayor Lerato Maloka described the SEZ as a story of hope that will specifically benefit young people. Gauteng MEC Vuyiswa Ramokgopa noted that the project is a bold step toward a more inclusive economy.
The government plans to co-ordinate across all levels to ensure the development is sustainable and accountable.
Ramokgopa urged Vaal residents to register their businesses and seek new training, which will likely provide many opportunities that this industrial hub is expected to bring to the heart of Gauteng.
