Sasolburg Operations has been recognised as one of South Africa’s leading performers in wastewater services in the 2024 national Green Drop assessment, achieving exceptional scores across all key performance areas and earning multiple top national accolades.
In the latest Green Drop report released on March 31, Sasolburg Operations achieved a 96.8% score at the plant level and 92.9% at the Water Services Institution level.
This performance secured their Green Drop Certification and ranked them as the country’s second-best wastewater services institution in their category.
In addition, Sasol’s Sasolburg Operations won the award for Best Private Technical Site Assessment 2025 with an outstanding Technical Site Assessment score of 94%.
According to the Minister of Water and Sanitation, Pemmy Majodina, the Green Drop results demonstrate that improvement is possible where leadership, technical competence, and sound financial management converge.
“Resilient water and sanitation systems are not only environmental imperatives but also drivers of economic development, public health, and social dignity,” she said.
Sasol was commended for its excellent performance, maintaining its treatment facilities in an exemplary low-risk position.
During the audit, it achieved 100% for Capacity Management, 95% for Environmental Management, 85% for Financial Management, 88% for Technical Management, and 100% for Effluent and Sludge Compliance.
“I want to congratulate our Utilities Water and Waste team for allowing us to maintain Green Drop Certification, and even improving our score under challenging circumstances,” said Ntokozo Gcabashe, Senior Vice President of Sasol’s Sasolburg and Natref Operations.
Sasolburg Operations treats 27,01kl/d industrial and domestic wastewater in Sasolburg and operates two pump stations and 21.2km sewer pipelines as part of its wastewater conveyance infrastructure.
In addition, Sasol is strengthening its engagement with local communities to address shared water, sanitation, and environmental priorities.
Support to the Metsimaholo Local Municipality includes funding a broader review of the Sasolburg/Zamdela sanitation system to identify ways to reduce raw sewage losses and limit stormwater ingress.
These initiatives may also positively support Sasol’s wastewater treatment operations.
