Vanderbijlpark family held at gunpoint during home invasion

Police in Vanderbijlpark are warning residents to tighten home security after an armed robbery in Miami Sands, where two suspects forced a family to transfer money through mobile banking apps and stole multiple household items.

VANDERBIJLPARK – Sedibeng District police urge residents to be vigilant following a house robbery in Miami Sands.

This is after two armed men gained entrance to a residence through the kitchen door just after 19:30 on April 19. The men confronted a 43-year-old homeowner who had been watching TV at the time. They threatened her and instructed her to remain silent.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Thembeka Maxambela says, “The suspects proceeded to gather other occupants in the house into the sitting room. They questioned the victims about whether the house belonged to a police officer, and upon being informed otherwise, indicated that they had been sent to the wrong address. Despite this, the suspects continued with the robbery.”

“They forced the victims to unlock their cellphones and access banking applications, transferring money via e-Wallet and Cash Send. The suspects further ransacked the house and stole various items before locking the victims in a bedroom and fleeing the scene.”

Maxambela confirms that a robbery case docket has been launched for investigation, adding that items stolen at the scene include cellphones, TV sets, watches, a laptop, a gas cylinder, glasses, and food. Police believe that the value of the items seized is substantial.

Following the incident, police urged residents to increase security at their residences.
SAPS urges residents to: Always lock doors and windows securely; install alarm systems and ensure good outdoor lighting; avoid opening doors for strangers; never share personal or financial information when threatened; and report any suspicious activity promptly to police.
