SASOLBURG – A manhunt is underway following the brazen escape of an alleged dangerous inmate at the Sasolburg Correctional Facility.
The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) has confirmed that offender Shima Matsie vanished on April 11 while part of an agricultural work team.
In a response to inquiries from Ster, DCS spokesperson Logan Maistry said a high-priority manhunt is underway.
“We are working around the clock with other law enforcement agencies to track and trace the escapee, to ensure re-apprehension and return to lawful custody,” he said.
Matsie, who is serving an eight-year sentence for robbery with aggravating circumstances, is no ordinary fugitive.
“The offender is sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment for robbery with aggravating circumstances and is therefore deemed dangerous to society,” said Maistry.
Early findings are already pointing to possible failures within the system.
The department has now initiated an investigation into the security breach.
“A full investigation has been instituted, and preliminary findings indicate that the escapee was part of an agricultural work team at the time of the incident and further point to possible lapses in adherence to established security protocols. At least one official has been placed on precautionary suspension pending the results of the final investigation,” he said.
Despite DCS insisting that strict Standard Operating Procedures govern the supervision of offenders, serious questions remain about how such a risky escape could happen under a watchful eye.
“Further processes are being undertaken to ensure accountability is enforced,” Maistry added.
Meanwhile, residents are being urged to stay alert as the manhunt intensifies.
“Members of the public are urged to remain vigilant and report any information that may assist in locating the escapee. Anyone who spots the individual should contact the nearest correctional facility or police station,” he said.
