VAALPARK – The DA in the Free State has announced Stone Makhema as their mayoral candidate of choice for the Metsimaholo Local Municipality.

This was announced today (May 4) at the Be My Guest Hotel and Conference Centre in Vaalpark.

Scores of DA members glowed in their party regalia, patiently waiting for the announcement after short speeches by dignitaries who graced the event.

Among those in attendance were Caucus Leader in the Free State Legislature, Dr. Roy Jankielsohn, Free State Deputy Provincial Chairperson Jafta Mokoena MPL, Member of Parliament Dr. Igor Scheurkogel, as well as local MMCs, councillors, and party members.

Ululation, loud vuvuzelas, and hugs as a gesture of congratulations were the order of the day as Makhema descended the stage to give words of appreciation.

Speaking before the announcement, Jankielsohn said, “The provincial government indicated that this district is an island of excellence. I want to congratulate the mayor of Fezile Dabi District Municipality and its MMCs. Thank you for the work that you do in Fezile Dabi, for assisting other local municipalities and ensuring that the Free State has something to brag about and a track record which we can showcase to the people of the province.”

Addressing the gathered crowds, Makhema said, “I’m honoured to accept this nomination as a mayoral candidate. Thank you for entrusting me with this kind of responsibility.”

Spanning 10 years as a member of the DA, Makhema applied for the number one post in 2016 but didn’t get the job.

Makhema said the journey didn’t deter him.

“This is a huge opportunity for the DA to galvanise the whole society, reimagine, and rebuild Metsimaholo to its former glory as a municipality that is characterised by good governance and accountability to its residents,” he said.
