VEREENIGING – For decades, she has been serving the Vaal community with nothing but pride, driven by her dedication. And now, Senior Professional Nurse, Binah Mbutuma, is closing the maternity ward bedside screen and the curtains for the last time as she retires.
On May 7, the Mediclinic Hospital in Vereeniging was filled with jubilation, ululation, and tears of joy as dozens of Mama B’s patients gathered outside for a guard of honour.
Like a baby revealing event, pink and blue balloons filled the hospital entrance as scores of Mbutuma’s colleagues ushered her to the door for the very last time.
Speech after speech, many of those whom she helped bring into this world, some now teens, took moments to wish their mom well.
Speaking to Ster following the short ceremony, flanked by some of her long-serving colleagues, Binah shared her journey in the nursing fraternity.
Reflecting on her 39 years in the profession, Binah told Ster that her journey began at Sebokeng Hospital before she moved to Mediclinic as an advanced midwife.
Her inspiration came from a nurse she admired while growing up in Bloemfontein, which sparked a lifelong passion for working with children.
“Since changing lanes and becoming a midwife, I believe I have brought about 25 children into this world. The first child I bore is 27 years old.”
Mama B shared a story of how she also helped that first child give birth later in life.
As she departs, Mama B offers simple advice for the next generation of nurses, noting that the spirit of Ubuntu is the true secret to a long and successful career.
