Outreach programme educates children about rights
As part of Child Protection Month, Constable Nompumelelo Zazini visited Siyakhula Care Centre to teach children about safety, abuse awareness, and their rights.
May is observed as Child Protection Month. Various stakeholders use the period to raise awareness about the rights, safety, and well-being of children.
To ensure that children’s rights are always upheld, Constable Nompumelelo Zazini carried out an outreach programme at Siyakhula Care Centre. Zazini was accompanied by Siyabangena Patrollers.
In order to get the kids to open up, the team began the visit by playing and singing with the kids, even getting them to perform recitals.
Zazini then taught the kids about the functions of the SAPS. She taught kids about their rights and urged them to report anyone who is abusing them.
“Do not talk to strangers or go anywhere with them. Don’t take money or any gifts from strangers. Tell your parents if anyone improperly touches you.”
Zazini told kids to treat police officers as their friends, as they are there to serve and protect them.
Speaking to Ster North, Zazini cited that children are regarded as part of the vulnerable group. She said it is important to create safe environments where children can grow, learn, and develop with dignity and support.
